The ACR has accepted 2,034 abstracts and the ARHP has accepted 92 abstracts for presentation during this year’s annual meeting. These abstracts will be presented in more than 50 concurrent sessions and three poster sessions.
This year’s lineup reflects the ACR/ARHP’s commitment to highlighting the latest scientific advances. Featured are three “Discovery 2007” ACR plenary sessions grouped thematically: “Advances in the Management of Arthritis and Osteoporosis”; “Pathogenesis and Treatment of Inflammatory Arthritis”; and “Insights into Autoimmunity.” Each session will include expert commentary.
“The 2007 plenary sessions continue to represent the highest-quality science and emphasize the impact of research on the ACR members and the rheumatology community,” notes Gary S. Firestein, MD, ACR basic science abstract chair.
In addition, 50 abstracts were accepted for the ACR Clinical Research Conference on Tuesday, November 6.
ACR Memorial Lectureships
The ACR Research and Education Foundation (REF) Memorial Lectureships were established through the generosity of those who recognized the remarkable influence Edmund L. Dubois, MD, Paul Klemperer, MD, Marshall J. Schiff, MD, and Oscar S. Gluck, MD, had on the field of rheumatology. In addition to the Paul Klemperer, MD, Memorial Lectureship (see p. 10), the following memorial lectureships will be presented at the ACR Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston this November:
- Edmund L. Dubois, MD, Memorial Lectureship: “Early Events in Lupus Autoimmunity: Lessons to be Learned,” Judith James, MD, PhD, Thursday, Nov. 8 from 4:30–6 p.m. Established by the Dubois family, this lectureship is presented to an outstanding young investigator in the field of lupus. Dr. Dubois was a pioneer in the study of systemic lupus erythematosus and a mentor to many ACR members. The winner is selected from the annual meeting abstracts.
- Marshall J. Schiff, MD, Memorial Lectureship: “Signaling Pathways Controlling Chondrocyte Maturation: Implications for the Development and Treatment of Osteoarthritis,” Regis O’Keefe, MD, PhD, Thursday, Nov. 8, from 2:30–4 p.m. In memory of Marshall J. Schiff, MD, the Schiff family established this endowed lectureship to addresses the interface between rheumatology and orthopedics in the area of musculoskeletal medicine.
- Oscar S. Gluck, MD, Memorial Lectureship: “Osteoclasts: What Do They Do and How Do They Do It,” Steven L. Teitelbaum, MD, Thursday, Nov. 8, from 7:45–8:45 a.m. The REF established this lectureship in 2005 to honor Dr. Gluck and his significant contributions to bone research. It features an outstanding researcher in the area of bone or bone metabolism.
