In late March, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) issued a letter to all DEA-registered prescribers about new training requirements included in last year’s appropriations budget.
Included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 is the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. The provision requires all DEA-registered prescribers to complete a one-time, eight-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid and substance use disorders. Beginning in June 2023, prescribers will be required to check a box on the DEA registration form indicating that the applicant has completed the training.
In addition, the letter outlines that education courses can be administered by several entities, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Medical Association (AMA). The AMA will develop a dedicated webpage for courses that will meet this requirement. The ACR will work with these entities to provide members with a list of available courses.
