The 2015 ACR/ARHP Annual Meeting in San Francisco is just around the corner, and it’s time to start planning for what is sure to be a busy week! Below are a few events hosted by the government affairs team you don’t want to miss.
Legislative Update
Sunday, Nov. 8, 9:00–10:00 a.m.
In 2015, we saw chronic care initiatives, the 21st Century Cures Act, the SGR repealed and more. By now, we all know that actions taken by Congress can have a real impact on our practices and patients. This session will feature Will Harvey, MD, chair of the ACR Government Affairs Committee, who will discuss how medicine and rheumatology have fared during the past year and the effect it may have on your practice. Dr. Harvey has tirelessly led the Government Affairs team, helping introduce two pieces of legislation, testifying before congressional committees and becoming a leading voice for medicine and patients on Capitol Hill.
The Government Affairs Committee will also host a special guest lawmaker from Capitol Hill to discuss the outlook for the second year of the 114th Congress.
Biosimilars in Rheumatology
Sunday, Nov. 8, 4:30–6:00 p.m.
During the recent state legislative cycle, 15 states passed new laws related to biosimilar substitution, which included provisions related to prescriber notification. It is expected that another 20 states will consider legislation in 2016. Find out if measures were introduced or enacted in your state, and hear from panelists who will provide updates on biosimilars and discuss specifics on state legislation.
Enhancing Practice Management Through State Advocacy
Monday, Nov. 9, 1:00–2:00 p.m.
Not only does your vote make a difference, but so does your voice. Lawmakers are more likely to listen to advocates who are also the constituents they see in their local community. Join this interactive session about how to be an advocate in your state on issues that Advance Rheumatology! Take part in a practical discussion among peers and staff about effective and time-efficient ways to engage in advocacy efforts for the legislation in your state.
Government Affairs & Advocacy Training
Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1:00–2:00 p.m.
After a week of learning about all things rheumatology, find out how you can share your knowledge, passion and energy to inform public policy. The ACR will be hosting former U.S. Sen. Tim Hutchinson (R-Ark.), who will share tips and ways you can be an effective advocate. Learn about the annual trips to Washington, D.C., and how to schedule local visits with your state and federal lawmakers. This year, the ACR will also debut its new tool to send important messages to your lawmaker directly from your smartphone.
