Another issue of current concern: the projected workforce shortage. Dr. Lee says the number of training positions has not significantly increased despite an increased demand for rheumatologic care. Approximately 25% of the fellows, those who are foreign medical school graduates, face legislative challenges when entering the workforce. “It is important that we are able to advocate about this issue to ensure ongoing provision of quality rheumatologic care,” she says.
The Takeaway
This year’s course will also explore drug pricing and the role of pharmacy benefit managers, including what payment reform means, how reimbursements happen and how all of those issues and regulations affect costs for patients.
Participants will leave the course with educational handouts to take to their home institutions and will be encouraged to share what they have learned with their colleagues.
