When the investigators adjusted their analysis for various covariates (e.g., age, smoking status, alcohol intake, body mass index, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, all types of diabetes and number of general practitioner visits over a defined time period), they found a higher body mass index was the only other variable independently associated with a higher risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.
