We send our deepest condolences to Dr. Kaye and his family.
CNN is calling Mrs. Gilbert-Kaye’s actions heroic. Mrs. Gilbert-Kaye was laid to rest on Monday.
Three other people, including Rabbi Goldstein were injured in the attack at Congregation Chabad in Poway, north of San Diego on Saturday. The shooting happened at around 11:30 a.m. PDT, when a 19-year-old gunman entered the synagogue during a Passover celebration, a religious service commemorating Jewish freedom, and opened fire.
San Diego police said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting, before calling 9-1-1 to report he was involved and surrendering without incident.
The shooting came six months after a gun attack killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. It was the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent U.S. history.
