The ACR published new recommendations for the management of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) in the November issue of Arthritis Care & Research.1 These guidelines have been endorsed by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. They apply to adult patients receiving oral glucocorticoid therapy.
The ACR last published GIOP recommendations in 2001. Several developments in the last decade supported the need for an update, including availability of additional therapies and new data on existing therapies included in the 2001 recommendations, development of updated approaches to identify patients at highest risk for fracture (e.g., the Fracture Risk Assessment tool), and the evolution of more methodologically rigorous processes for guideline development.
