This finding suggests inflammation has a potential pathogenic role in the development of myocardial infarction and stroke in SLE patients. Researchers conclude by emphasizing the value of routine evaluation of cardio vascular risk factors for SLE patients. “Additional research is also needed to investigate strategies to minimize the inflammatory response associated with increased [cardiovascular disease] risk, especially in the early stages of SLE,” they write. “Research could also investigate whether early aggressive treatment of inflammatory processes objectively decreases [cardiovascular disease] incidence.”
