ACR Member Named PPAC Physician Researcher of the Year

Captain Lisa Rider, MD, a physician-scientist and clinical researcher at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., was named 2011 Physician Researcher of the Year by the Physicians Professional Advisory Committee of the United States Public Health Service. The award was presented in recognition of her basic and clinical research into myositis. Her recent research findings have included: definitions of improvement as a primary composite endpoint for myositis clinical trials, discovery of a novel autoantibody in juvenile dermatomyositis and discovery of new immunogenetic risk factors for juvenile myositis. Her epidemiologic and clinical studies in myositis have made substantial contributions to public health practice.

Staff member Joan “Happy” Tyree has worked in arthritis since May 1982, when she joined the staff of the ACR. She began her career with the ARHP in August 1984. During her years at the ARHP, she has worked in membership and educational programs, coordinating the development of more than 26 ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting programs.

Volunteering can increase perceived self-efficacy, self-esteem, and positive affect, which all can result in enhanced psychological health. Volunteering leads to the opportunity for social interaction or networking many times with individuals with whom you normally would not interact. A 2009 article found that 20% of the volunteers in their study stated that their health had improved since volunteering and that nearly 30% stated that their lives in general were improved in relation to their volunteering. The association between volunteering and greater health and happiness is a definite plus to volunteering in a professional organization such as the ARHP.

French Scientist Honored with International Award

Pierre Miossec, MD, of the department of immunology and rheumatology at the Hospital Eduoard Herriot and professor of clinical immunology of Claude Bernard University, both in Lyon, France, was awarded the Carol Nachman Prize for Rheumatology this May in Wiesbaden, Germany. The award promotes clinical, therapeutic, and experimental studies in rheumatology and is the highest international honor for rheumatology research. Dr. Miossec, a long-time researcher of the role of cytokines in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), was honored for his discoveries of the functions of the T cell–derived cytokine interleukin-17 (IL-17) in this inflammatory disease.
